Figuring it all out: Reverse Engineering Access-Flavored SQL

by James Hunt, Director

I wanted to talk briefly about one of my more interesting client projects: reverse engineering Microsoft Access SQL queries from a complicated data pipeline across dozens of separate database files and hundreds of table-creating SQL queries.

The challenge? Maintaining fidelity with the existing process, whose outputs were consumed directly by Finance.  Manual conversion was out of the question–too much room for error in query translation.

Instead, I built a program to extract queries from Access, parse them into an intermediate “meta-SQL” resembling ANSI SQL, and then translate them into Snowflake-flavored SQL in a dbt model.

Our Data People
Solving Your Data Problems.

We find talented data people and give them a place where they can excel at being their best selves: nerdy data folks who are up on the latest tools, trends, and techniques.

Then we unleash them on your data problems.

Whether you’re looking to modernize an on-premise data warehouse, validate a modern data stack architecture and implementation, or just super charge a data analytics / data science project inside of your own organization, we have the data people you need.

Solving Data Problems: Don’t Lose the Metadata

by Raj Iyer, Principal Consultant

Decision makers all ask the same sorts of questions about the data they rely on:

  1. Where did this data come from?

  2. What processing has been done on it?

  3. Who does this data belong to, and can we contact them?

When data teams give good answers to these questions in a timely manner, they win the trust of the decision makers.  This is why we care so much about clean data architecture and audited data lineage.

The metadata–where it came from, who it belongs to, how and when it is prepared–is often more valuable than the data itself!

There’s nothing a talented data team can’t handle.

We’re on a mission: To reimagine data consulting and redefine expectations. Our people-centric approach to advisory, delivery and support put you at the center of everything we do — right where you belong.
